Environmental and Health Education
Environmental and health education in many rural areas
of southern Africa is one of the most important issues
facing conservation and the long term management of
natural resources. It is essential to create an awareness
and understanding among the next, and the current,
generation of leaders of the critical need to conserve
the ecosystems that sustain life. The Sindisa Foundation
believes that this is an essential element of any
conservation or rural development project.
In South Africa, Sindisa supports the Amakhala Conservation
Centre; in Namibia it has provide some support for Children
in the Wilderness and the Rare and Endangered Species Trust
as well as for the training of rhino monitors by Save the
Rhino Trust, in Zimbabwe the concept is fundamental to the
establishment of the Leadwood Institute.
International School Field Expeditions
Sindisa organises School Field Expeditions on which the participants have the opportunity to experience
wildlife conservation and rural economic development projects. They are able to interact with rural communities,
to meet researchers, conservationists, game ranchers and tourism operators and to see things from the position
of those who live and work in the countries they visit.
Expeditions are accompanied by two teachers from the school and are generally limited to 12 participants.
The aim is for the students to gain an understanding of conservation and the role of rural communities in
Africa and to extend their knowledge of southern African countries and cultures.
