The Trans Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA) initiative is,
without doubt, the most significant change in wildlife
conservation and rural development planning in recent times.
In its inclusiveness of rural communities and its scale, it
gives both the rural people and the environment of southern
Africa the most likely chance of a successful and
sustainable future.
While Sindisa promotes the overall TFCA programme, it has
focused on the Greater Limpopo TFCA and specifically on the
Zimbabwe section. The area includes the Gonarezhou National
Park, the Save Valley Conservancy, the Malilangwe Reserve
and all the rural communities adjacent to the protected
areas.
The
circumstances under which Zimbabwe conservation and rural
development has to function are challenging in the extreme.
That, however, is the very reason why Sindisa has embarked
on an effort to assist with projects to establish new
conservation centres. While the conservation centre is the
platform for stimulating and coordinating research,
conservation, education, training and rural development
projects, it is the projects themselves that are the road to
the future. Support for these projects, some of which are
listed below, comes in many forms from funds to materials to
expertise. The Sindisa “Rapid Response Fund” is just one
such contribution.
Sindisa actively sources financial, material and
intellectual support for these projects. In doing so it
accepts the responsibility of ensuring that the resources
which pass through its hands are applied to projects
efficiently and effectively and are managed with
transparency and accountability.
